Water & Sanitation
“Toilet” is something with which coastal communities were not familiar. Women, children and men alike are accustomed to defecate along the sea shore. The tsunami rehabilitation process has paved the path for the introduction of toilets in the fishermen villages. Initially many were not amenable to this novel practice.

They considered this as a discomfort and an unnecessary item of expenditure. Constant sanitary and hygiene awareness campaigns were conducted which brought about a sea change especially among women and adolescent girls. This was followed by construction of toilets with electricity and running water facilities.
